Biography

Dr. Copeland is currently a Medical Director at UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. She is board certified in family medicine and a fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Copeland received her medical degree from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA and completed her family medicine internship and residency at Banner University Medical Center-Phoenix. She was in private practice for many years in southwest Phoenix in an underserved area. She continued to precept family medicine residents for many years and still serves on the residency advisory committee. She eventually sold her practice to a large health system and worked for them for a few years before working with a community health center where she precepted medical students. Dr. Copeland then served three years as the Medical Director for Healthcare for the Homeless while it was under the Maricopa County Department of Public Health and had both medical students and residents on rotation. She precepts students for SHOW and Street Medicine-Phoenix and also serves as a capstone faculty preceptor. She loves to learn from her students and is pleased when she is able to teach them something that they might be able to apply to helping their patients find health and wellness.

As a family physician, Dr. Copeland has always been an advocate of the importance of good health for her patients which starts with prevention. As the physician for people experiencing homelessness, Dr. Copeland understands the importance of social determinants of health as well as having a good support system and social services within the community. As the mother of children with special needs, she understands the importance of self-advocating and independence, and is very interested in education, accessibility and transitions through life. Lastly, she is a strong believer in the importance of nutrition and exercise for good physical and mental health.
